Privacy Policy

Effective date: July 20, 2026

Overview

This policy explains what Nearli collects, how it's used, and the choices you have. The short version: we collect what we need to show you what's happening nearby and to run your account — and we do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own advertising.

Information you give us

Account: name, email address, password (stored as a secure hash by our auth provider), and optional profile details — username, bio, avatar photo, and interests. Content: check-in photos, group messages, saved items, event attendance responses, and business listings you create. AI conversations: the questions you type to the Nearli assistant.

Location information

With your device's permission, we use your location while you're using the app to show nearby events and places, center the map, and ground AI recommendations. Your approximate coordinates are sent with those requests and are cached on your own device. If you deny location access, the app defaults to Austin, TX and remains fully usable. We do not build a history of your movements and we never sell location data.

Information collected automatically

Basic technical data needed to run and protect the Service: IP address (used for security and for rate-limiting free AI searches), device and browser type, and server logs kept by our hosting provider. We use cookies and similar storage for sign-in sessions and app preferences (like theme and onboarding state) — not for third-party advertising or cross-site tracking.

No advertising trackers

Nearli does not run third-party analytics or advertising trackers. We do not use Google Analytics, the Meta (Facebook) pixel, TikTok or other ad-network pixels, advertising SDKs, or cross-site tracking cookies, and we do not participate in targeted or cross-context behavioral advertising. Because of this, we do not "sell" or "share" personal information as those terms are defined by the California Consumer Privacy Act, and there is no opt-out for you to exercise. If we ever add such tools, we will update this policy and provide the required notices and opt-out controls before turning them on.

How we use information

To provide and personalize the Service (nearby results, AI recommendations, your saved items and groups); to process subscriptions; to enforce our Terms and Community Guidelines (including reviewing reported content); to send service communications and, if you enable them, notifications and reminders; and to keep the Service secure. Recommendation personalization is based on your in-app activity (like interests, saves, and check-ins).

Who processes your data

We share data only with service providers who process it to run Nearli, under their own contractual obligations: Supabase (authentication, database, file storage), Stripe (payments — we never see or store your full card number), OpenAI and/or Anthropic (your assistant questions and approximate location are sent to generate AI recommendations), Google (optional Google sign-in; address geocoding for business listings), and Vercel (hosting and server logs). Event data comes from providers like Ticketmaster — we receive event information from them and do not send them your personal data. We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights and safety of users and the public.

What other users can see

Your profile (name, username, avatar, badges, level) is visible to other users, including on leaderboards and in groups you join. Group messages are visible to that group's members. Check-in photos may be visible in contexts where the feature displays them. You can block users and report content at any time.

Your rights & choices

You can view and edit your profile and interests anytime in Settings. You can permanently delete your account and associated data in-app (Profile → Settings → Delete account) — no email required. Depending on where you live (including Texas, California, and the EU/UK), you may also have rights to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your personal data, and to appeal a decision — contact us through the Help section to exercise them; we do not discriminate for exercising privacy rights. We do not sell or share personal data as those terms are defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act, and we do not use it for targeted advertising as defined under the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act.

Data retention

We keep your data while your account is active. When you delete your account, your profile and associated records are deleted; residual copies may persist briefly in backups before being purged, and we may retain limited records where required by law (for example, payment records processed by Stripe).

Children

Nearli is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us through the Help section and we will delete it.

Security

We use industry-standard safeguards — encrypted connections (HTTPS), hashed passwords, row-level access controls on our database, and secrets kept out of client code. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security; if a breach affecting your personal data occurs, we will notify you as required by law.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we'll give reasonable notice (in-app or by email) before they take effect and update the date above.
